Braving the elements, Tangedco workers continue restoration work through the day
Overnight rain and inundation of agricultural fields in parts of the Cauvery delta slowed down relief and restoration work in cyclone affected areas on Thursday.
Agricultural fields in many parts of the core delta districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur were left inundated by moderate to heavy overnight rainfall. On Thursday, several parts of Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts recorded heavy and intermittent rain, forcing electricity workers to take breaks now and then in some places.
Braving the rain
The workers — who were carrying out re-installation of electric posts — found it extremely difficult to carry concrete electric posts through water-logged fields.
A senior official of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), who is overseeing electricity restoration work by camping in Nagapattinam, told The Media that though the rain had made the restoration difficult, the work continued all through the day, on Thursday.
According to Electricity Minister P. Thangamani, so far, 46,000 of the 1.13 lakh damaged electricity poles in the four districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai have been reinstalled.
An officer supervising relief and restoration works in the delta conceded that though the rain hampered work, there was no slackness on the part of the officials and field workers. The weather is expected to improve by Friday, he pointed out, and hoped that there would not be much of an impact on the restoration efforts. Thiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur district recorded maximum rainfall of 10 cm during the 24-hour period, ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kollidam (7 cm), Sirkazhi (6 cm), Mayiladuthurai (5 cm) and Vedaranyam (3 cm) in Nagapattinam district too received heavy rain.
Tiruvarur, Nannilam, Mannargudi, Thiruthuraipoondi and Muthupettai in Tiruvarur district and Kumbakonam, Orathanadu, Thanjavur and Pattukottai in Thanjavur district were among the places that received heavy rain on Thursday.
