Connecting Munnar with Marayur, Chinnar and Kanthalloor
Work on a new bridge at Periyavarai connecting Munnar with Marayur, Chinnar and Kanthalloor areas is progressing fast and is expected to be completed in 15 days.
A temporary bridge there was washed away in the flood on November 17.
The temporary bridge parallel to the British-made bridge was constructed after the latter was destroyed in the August floods.
The bridge is the only link connecting Udumalpet in Tamil Nadu with Munnar and Ernakulam.
Though the initial work began last week, it later progressed in a slow pace, inviting criticism from the public.
The Public Works Minister personally intervened and ordered the work to be completed in 15 days.
An official of the Public Works Department said that the new bridge would have 36 culverts.
Passage of heavy vehicles with more than the allowed load was stated to be the reason for the destruction of the temporary bridge. The temporary bridge had rings for the passage of water and was built with sand-loaded sacks and by laying sand over the rings.
The new bridge is also coming up on the same spot.
