Sushma Swaraj trolling: Congress blames it on climate of intoleranceAbhishek Manu Singhvi sought to know how many of Ms. Swaraj’s colleagues had condemned it

The Congress on Monday blamed the online trolling of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on a “Frankenstein monster” that had been unleashed and a certain climate that had been created in the country in the last four years.

While saying his party had condemned the abuse, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought to know how many of Ms. Swaraj’s colleagues had condemned it.

This happened on a day when Home Minister Rajnath Singh became the first in the government to break his silence and disapprove of trolls harassing Ms. Swaraj for days over the transfer of a passport officer for allegedly humiliating an inter-faith couple.

“Sushma Swaraj’s trolling must be a week old. I have condemned it on the first day while I was abroad . The Congress has never supported it. I am not talking about Sushma Swaraj. Anybody who creates a Frankenstein monster must remember that the definition of a Frankenstein monster is that they swallow you up. Anybody who rides a tiger must know that the tiger has to decide when to eat you up. You can’t decide when to dismount,” Mr. Singhvi said.

“This is a tiger put beneath Mrs. Sushma Swaraj by the party to which she belongs. She cannot say so; let me say it on her behalf. She is the victim of the Frankenstein monster and the tiger which her party and her party’s thinking has created. And unfortunately it is Abhishek Singhvi who has to condemn it on twitter. How many of her party colleagues have condemned it? The Congress has condemned it.”

He added: “Worse trolling has been done to my colleague Priyanka Chaturvedi. It does not matter if it is Priyanka Chaturvedi or Sushma Swaraj. The message you are sending is the climate you are creating. The climate you are creating is precisely this climate.”

Mr. Singhvi said there was a marked climate of intolerance, with incidents of lynching on various grounds almost each day.

“When the State gives the ‘License to Kill’ with impunity and abdicates its solemn responsibility to uphold the ‘Rule of Law’, resulting in vigilantism, death and merciless killings of innocent lives, each one of us should castigate it, decry it and question it,” he said. “‘Social Media’ (Whats App driven) rumours resulting in killing of innocent people through rogue justice of mob violence have unmistakably shaken the collective conscience of our nation.”
