JAIPUR: A verbal spat between a couple took an ugly turn on Sunday when the woman jumped into a well, followed by her husband at Hanota Ki Dhani near Shyampura village under Bassi police station area in the outskirts of Jaipur. The husband died while the rescue team managed to bail the wife out. Condition of the wife is also critical as she is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to police, the couple identified as Shankar Meena (25) and his wife Mamta Meena (23) were staying alone since they got married three years ago. Neigbours said that they used to indulge into day-to-day verbal spat.“Locals said that the woman first got out of the house at 12.00 pm on Sunday and jumped into a well which is situated almost 150 meters away from her home. Seeing her jumping into the well the husband Shankar also jumped into it. People in the neighbourhood came near the well and started their ways and means to bail out the trapped couple before informing us,” said Pushpendra Singh, assistant commissioner of police, Bassi.
He added that a large number of policemen including the team of state disaster relief force also rushed to the spot. “With the help of ropes and our divers we managed to bail out the couple. Shankar was unable to breathe so was his wife. Both were rushed to the hospital where the husband was declared brought dead while the wife’s condition is critical,” Singh added.
Asked what triggered the verbal spat, Singh, said, “It is not yet cleared as the husband already died while the wife is battling for life. Both were living alone in the area.”
Police added that the woman is also pregnant and both had no immediate relative in the house. “Nothing is clear on why the woman jumped into the well initially. Her statements would be recorded only after the permission of the doctors at the hospital,” said a senior police officer.
