COLVA: Investigation into the gangrape of a 20-year-old girl at Betalbatim is almost complete and the police are awaiting the forensic laboratory report from Hyderabad to file a chargesheet.
Colva police inspector Filomeno Costa said that all the statements have been recorded and the chargesheet will be filed within a fortnight once the analysis is received. A 2018 ordinance makes it mandatory for the police to complete the investigation into rape cases within a period of two months.
Superintendent of police Arvind Gawas, who is undergoing training at Hyderabad, informed that the probe is complete and they are in the process of finalizing the chargesheet against the three accused from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.The incident had sparked public outcry and there was growing demand from the coastal belt for increased night patrolling.
The South Goa collector had accordingly ordered stringent measures to ensure safety of beach-goers.Police had approached the court seeking handcuffs for the three accused Sanjeev Dhananjay Pal, Ram Santosh Bhariya and Ishwar Makran as they had a criminal background. Makran had a rape caseregistered against him, wherein he had eloped with a girl and subsequently married her. The other two are daily wagers and involved in thefts.
