Ahmedabad Metro eyes pre-LS poll runAHMEDABAD: The much-awaited Metro rail project in Ahmedabad city is all set to be rolled out before the end of the current financial year 2018-19. The 6km stretch from Vastral to Apparel Park is likely to be ready by the end of this year. Metro rail officials said that the small stretch between APMC Vasna to Jivraj Park will also be ready in 45 days.
Last November, South Korean metro rolling stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem was awarded the Rs 1,032 crore contract to supply 32 three-car trains for MEGA’s 39.26km Phase-1 project. The trains, being manufactured at the company’s Changwon plant, are to be delivered between April 2019 and July 2020. Hyundai-Rotem had assured us that the first two of the three-car trains will arrive by January, but in a meeting held on June 20 with representatives from Union government, we have pushed for further preponing the train deliveries so that we can begin trial runs early,” said managing director, MEGA, IP Gautam.A senior MEGA official told TOI that each train will be approximately 3m wide and can travel at a maximum speed of 80 kmph, while carrying 782 passengers. The trains can run without drivers. Each MEGA coach will consist of convenient space for wheelchair, four CCTV cameras for passenger safety, LED route guide indicators, fire detectors, and a passenger information display system.
The officials said that they want the coaches to be delivered fast so that the inauguration can be done in January before the Lok Sabha election in 2019. MEGA officials said authorities were keen to have the project operational before the election code of conduct is announced. The entire Phase-I project is likely to be completed by June 2020. Officials said the elevated corridor work should be finished by end of 2019, and the underground tracks by June 2020.
