In-charges replaced, prominent regional leaders given additional responsibilities
The DMK leadership on Sunday made sweeping changes in the party administration in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem and Namakkal districts, replacing existing party in-charges with new faces, and in some cases, giving additional charge to prominent regional leaders.
The western region has been the DMK’s weakest link with its local leaders unable to make a dent in AIADMK’s influence till Jayalalithaa was around. In fact, the AIADMK managed to retain power in 2016 only because of its enormous success in the western districts.
The changes in the district units were made on the recommendations of senior advocate N.R. Elango, which were endorsed by DMK working president M.K. Stalin.
“A couple of months ago, Mr. Stalin during a review meeting with the party’s second-line leaders and office-bearers at all levels, had warned that action would be taken against those who worked against the interests of the party. He has kept his promise,” said a senior leader.
Mr. Stalin had also kept a box at the meeting venue to encourage party functionaries to submit their views and suggestions for the development of the party.
