Declare ceasefire like Vajpayee did CM

Declare ceasefire like Vajpayee did CMIn a significant push for a peace process, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Government and all mainstream parties, on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a “unilateral ceasefire” during Ramzan and the Amarnath Yatra. The request followed a marathon meeting of the ruling and Opposition parties. Such a measure, the CM said, would “restore the confidence of people”.“There was a consensus that we should appeal to the Government of India to consider a unilateral ceasefire on the occasion of Ramzan and Amarnath Yatra like (former PM Atal Bihari) Vajpayee did,” Mehbooba said.In November 2000, the then PM Vajpayee had made a unilateral declaration of cessation of combat operations against militants in the state during the month of Ramzan.Mehbooba was accompanied by Deputy CM Kavindar Gupta, suggesting that both the PDP and the BJP had a consensus on the ceasefire plan. She also said that implementation of the Agenda of Alliance, a governing document agreed upon by the ruling allies, will help in “changing the situation”.The request for ceasefire came in the backdrop of growing violence in the Kashmir Valley. The meeting was attended by representatives from the ruling PDP and BJP, and key Opposition parties National Conference and Congress, besides others.Ali Mohammad Sagar, who represented the NC, said his party favoured a ceasefire.Ramzan, the Muslim fasting month, is scheduled to begin next week.Mehbooba said an all-party delegation would meet the PM to discuss and convince him on a ceasefire.
