No injuries reported; traffic diverted for several hours; girder relaunched later in the day
A girder for an under-construction flyover collapsed at the busy MTNL bridge intersection on S.V. Road in Goregaon on Sunday morning. Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the incident happened around 6.45 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The BMC was launching the girder with the help of two cranes, one on each side of S.V. Road. According to civic officials, one of the supporting cords of the crane towards Link Road snapped, due to which the girder fell. The weight of the prefabricated steel girder, which spanned the entire width of the road, caused the crane to topple onto it.
No vehicles or pedestrians nearby
“We are investigating why the accident occurred. Our objective was to launch the girder and clear the road, for which another crane had to be brought in,” said the official. Police officers said there were no vehicles or pedestrians in the vicinity as traffic blockades were in place.
After the incident, the police diverted east-west traffic via Mrinal Tai Gore flyover in Oshiwara and Sainath subway in Malad. Those travelling between Malad and Goregaon were rerouted through Chincholi Bunder and Prem Nagar Road. The girder was relaunched and the traffic diversions were removed at 1.50 p.m.
The bridge is being constructed since 2016 and is expected to be commissioned by May. Officials said two more girders will be launched on Sunday night and four more next week.
