CCTV footage from nearby shops, CDR being examined
Mumbai: The Kalyan taluka police, investigating the alleged murder of a 22-year-old boy and the rape of his 20-year-old girlfriend, suspect that the accused might hail from nearby Ambarnath.
The couple was allegedly accosted by the accused, who is yet to be identified, on Monday evening. He first tried to rob them. When the boy resisted, the accused shot him and raped the girl at gunpoint, after which he fled the scene.
“The spot where the offence occurred is a hillock and does not have residential complexes. However, Ambarnath is just two kilometres from the spot, and we suspect that the accused might hail from there. Inquiries are under way with this aspect in mind,” Superintendent of Police Mahesh Patil, Thane rural police, said.
On Wednesday, the rape victim gave a description to the investigating team, on the basis of which a sketch is being prepared. “We have made a primary sketch, but need to verify it before we can proceed,” Mr. Patil said.
Investigating officers said while there are no CCTV cameras in the immediate vicinity of the scene of the crime, footage from cameras of commercial establishments on the road leading to the spot is being examined.
The police are also examining the call detail record of all numbers that passed through the cellular towers covering the spot, and looking into the movements of all the numbers that moved towards the spot on Monday evening and then moved in the direction specified by the victim in her statement.
“Inquiries are on with local informants in Ambarnath and nearby areas to find out if anyone has been missing since the day of the incident. We are also finding out if other girls have been targeted at the spot and did not report the incident,” an officer, who is part of the investigation, said.
